A Calm Introduction To The Online World
6. What Is a Website? And Could You Build One Someday?

For many people, websites feel like big, technical things built by companies or coders.
But what if I told you:
A website can be something small, personal, and entirely yours?
And that you could create one — step by step, no experience required?
In this lesson, we’ll explore what websites really are, and why they’re not just for tech experts or businesses anymore.
So... What Is a Website?
A website is simply a space on the internet where information lives.
Each website has:
- A web address (like bbc.co.uk or getonlinestepbystep.com)
- One or more pages (like chapters in a book)
- A purpose (to inform, share, teach, sell, or connect)
Some websites are huge (Amazon).
Some are tiny (like a one-page blog).
All are made up of words, images, and links — just like this page you’re on now.

Think of a Website Like a Home
Your web address is like your street address
Your homepage is your front door
Your pages and posts are the rooms inside
And you?
You’re the one who decides what goes where.
Who Can Build A Website?
Here’s the good news:
Anyone. Yes. Even you.
If you can:
- Type into a box
- Click a button
- Drag and drop
…then you can build a simple website. Especially with tools like:
- WordPress
- Weebly
- Squarespace
- Divi (which I use and love)
You don’t need coding skills. (I did try to learn coding but there are people who do it far better than I could ever manage or enjoy!!!)
You don’t need design training. You just need willingness, and the right support.
Why Might You Want a Website?
You might want a website if you’ve ever thought:
- “I want to share what I’ve learned.”
- “I want a place for my ideas.”
- “I want to help others and maybe earn a little income.”
A website can be:
- A blog
- A portfolio
- A shop
- A guide
- A space to teach
- A way to connect with others, without social media noise
It’s your space, in your style, at your pace.
You Don’t Have to Decide Yet
This lesson isn’t saying “Go build a website today.”
It’s saying:
“You could. And if you want to, I’ll help you when you’re ready.”
Learning what websites are is the first step.
Believing you’re allowed to have one? That’s even more powerful.
Your Task For Today
- Visit a website or blog
- Click around slowly. Notice what it includes.
- Ask yourself:
If I had a website, what would I put on it?
You don’t need the answers today. Just sit with the idea.
And Finally...
The internet isn’t just something you use.
It’s something you can contribute to.
You don’t need permission. You just need a starting point.
