A Calm Introduction To The Online World
9. What’s a Blog, Really? (And Why You Don’t Have to Be a Writer)

When people hear the word “blog,” they often picture one of two things:
- A polished, professional site with weekly articles
- Or a personal online diary with oversharing and fancy fonts
But…
A blog can be both of those things. Or neither. It can be entirely yours.
This lesson will explain what blogs are, what they can be, and why you don’t need to be a writer to begin one.
What Is a Blog?
A blog is a part of a website (or sometimes the whole site) that shares posts — kind of like articles, letters, or journal entries.
Each post is:
- Published on a page
- Usually written around a single topic
- Can include images, links, or videos
- Appears in a list (often with the newest at the top)
Blogs are how many people teach, share, encourage, and even earn online — one post at a time.

Why Might You Start One?
You might want a blog if you’ve ever thought:
- “I have things I want to say.”
- “I’ve learned things I’d love to share.”
- “I want to help others who feel the way I did.”
Some bloggers:
- Teach what they know
- Share a journey or project
- Offer gentle inspiration
- Build community
- Earn through affiliate links or digital products
A blog doesn’t have to be big, loud, or fast. It can be quiet, and thoughtful — just like you.
Do I Have to Be a “Writer?
Not at all.
A blog post can be:
- A list of helpful tips
- A step-by-step guide
- A reflection on something you’ve learned
- A simple “how-to” with pictures
- A story from your own experience
- Pictures from your travels
If you can talk about it, you can write it down.
Your tone, your pace, your voice — that’s what makes it a blog.
You don’t need perfect grammar.
You don’t need “blogger voice.”
You just need to speak to your reader, not at them.
What Does a Blog Look Like?

Your Task For Today
- Visit a small blog or one from someone you admire. This is blog is by a friend of mine who is passionate about the subject. Have a look HERE
- Look at the structure:
- What’s on the homepage?
- What do the blog posts look like?
If I wrote a post, what would it be about?
You don’t have to write it today. Just think about what wants to be said.
And Finally...
Blogging isn’t a performance.
It’s not about going viral, or writing for algorithms.
It’s about showing up — for yourself, and for someone else who needs your voice.
