A Calm Introduction to The Online World
What Is The Online World? (And Why It's OK If You're Late To It)

If you would like to watch the video which accompanies this lesson just click the yellow box and it will take you to YouTube so you can see the video.
If you’re brand new to the online world and not quite sure where to begin, this free course is for you. It walks you through the real basics — what the internet actually is, how websites work, and what it means to “get online.” No jargon. No pressure. Just real understanding, one small step at a time.
Maybe you’ve asked yourself (quietly):
“Everyone else seems to know what they’re doing online. Am I the only one who doesn’t?”
Let me say this clearly:
You are not alone. And you are not behind.
The online world isn’t something you missed. It’s just something you’re beginning — now, in your own time. And this lesson is your first safe step.
So... What Is the Online World?
When people say “online,” they usually mean:
- Using the Internet to find information
- Visiting Websites ( like new, blogs or shops)
- Using email or apps to communicate
- Watching videos, reading articles, or learning

But let’s take a step back.
At its simplest, the online world is a place full of information and connection. It’s like a giant library crossed with a busy town square — only it lives inside your device.
You can explore it.
You can ignore it.
You can even build your own quiet little corner inside it (which is what I help people do).
What You’re Using to Get Online
To “be online,” you need:
- A device (laptop, tablet, phone)
- An internet connection (Wi-Fi or data)
- A browser (like Chrome, Safari, or Firefox)
You open your browser → type something into a search bar → and you’re online.
It’s not magic.
It’s not just for young people.
And you don’t need to know everything to start.
But Isn’t It Too Late for Me?
This is the part that matters.
No, it’s not too late.
Many of the readers I work with are in their 40s, 50s, 60s, and beyond. Some never used a computer at work. Others had children who did “all that tech stuff.” And now they’re wondering if they’ve missed the boat.
You haven’t.
The internet is vast, yes — but there’s space for you here.
And there’s still joy in learning, even now. In fact, especially now.

Let’s Reflect
Before we move on, here’s your only task today:
Think about something you’d love to find or do online.
It might be:
- Reading about a hobby
- Starting a blog
- Learning to email a friend
- Building a little something of your own
Write that down. Just for you. You don’t need to act on it yet — just notice the desire.
That’s the spark. And it matters.
And Finally...
This course isn’t about catching up.
It’s about stepping forward — at your pace, in your voice.
Ready for the next step?
